Nissin Mouko Tanmen Nakamoto Hokkyoku Black Ramen

Mouko Tanmen Nakamoto is a very popular Tokyo-based ramen chain specializing in spicy Tanmen noodle soups. It offers many varieties of spicy hot ramen and their spicy scales are written in the menu.

Among those, Hokkyoku ramen, literally north pole ramen, has the highest spicy scale and is said to be the spiciest ramen in Tokyo.

Its instant cup ramen was created by Nissin in collaboration with Mouko Tanmen Nakamoto in 2014 and has been repeatedly sold for a limited time in Japan’s 7-eleven convenience stores.

Actually, a variant of the Nissin Mouko Tanmen Nakamoto Hokkyoku Ramen was newly released in Japan this February, and I tried it for the first time today.

The Japanese instant ramen I tasted this time is this Nissin Mouko Tanmen Nakamoto Hokkyoku Black Ramen.

Unlike the original north pole ramen with a red package shown above, the black north pole ramen gives a dark impression like something was burnt.

In fact, the Nissin Mouko Tanmen Nakamoto Hokkyoku Black Ramen features a soup broth with which its packaging is associated.

Ingredients

When you peel back the paper lid about halfway, you will see dried ingredients with black colors scattered over the dried noodles.

According to the ingredient list, the topping on the dried noodles consists of minced seasoned chicken, sesame seeds, cloud ear mushrooms, fried burnt garlic bits, red chili pepper, and chopped green onions.

Like its regular version, this black north pole ramen has a red flavor packet pasted on the lid, which contains Nakamoto’s special burnt garlic oil.

You add the special flavoring oil to the cup as a final touch just after you cook the instant ramen.

The broth has a black color that reminds you of the packaging and is mainly flavored with powdered Miso soybean paste.

Taste

The Nissin Mouko Tanmen Nakamoto Hokkyoku Black Ramen is characterized by the outstanding Miso-based garlicky flavor and aroma that stimulates the appetite.

Indeed, it is super spicy, yet really savory and has lots of aromatic umami that comes from burnt garlic chips and oil. In fact, the savory umami taste overwhelms the heat.

Conclusion

If you like spicy instant noodles, the black north pole ramen is an item recommended for you. If you get a chance, why not give it a try?
