Teradomari Fish Market: Sightseeing Place in Niigata

Yesterday, I went to Teradomari Fish Market with my friends to see marine products and eat fresh seafood.

Teradomari Fish Market

Teradomari Fish Market, also known as “Sakana no Ameyoko (魚のアメ横)”, is located in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, the city famous nationwide for its fireworks festival in Japan.

Although I think “Tsukiji (築地)” is the best-recognized fish market in Japan, the Teradomari Fish Market Niigata boasts is a well-established fish market that represents the Sea of Japan side.

Therefore, there are always a lot of tourists seeing marine products in the market, but yesterday I didn’t see so many people walking along the street because we arrived there at around 4 in the afternoon. Actually, the fish market closes at 5 p.m.

Marine Products

Teradomari Fish Market stocks and sells a wide variety of marine products ranging from expensive high-grade fish to processed seafood. For example, the luxurious fish and shellfish sold in the market include black-throat seaperch “Nodoguro (のどぐろ)” and abalone “Awabi (アワビ)”.

Meanwhile, you can find processed foods, such as the fermented salted seafood “Shiokara (塩辛)” and the seafood Kamameshi bento, there.

Kaki oysters

If you want to, you can taste crab meat and shellfish like oysters in some stores along the market street, where there are 11 fish dealers in total. Walking around the market, seeing marine products, is just fun.

In Teradomari Fish Market, various kinds of seafood dishes are available, which include bowls of rice with fresh sashimi slices on top and seafood ramens, such as crab ramen and Iwanori (unprocessed raw nori) ramen.

As I mentioned above, you can also try out fresh oysters and scallops there. In fact, I enjoyed the scallop Hotate with a sauce of soy sauce and lemon juice.

What is more, quite a few seafood skewers can be found in the stores of some fish dealers. Such foods include grilled squid, grilled prawn, deep-fried shrimp, and salt-grilled sweetfish.

We bought skewers of grilled squid and grilled prawn. Once we ordered, a store staff began cooking them right in front of us, so we were able to have the fresh ones with the smell of the sea. They were very savory and really delicious.

A wide range of souvenirs can be bought at several shops along the street of Teradomari Fish Market, so it is quite hard to decide what to choose. By the way, the ones shown in the photo above are beautiful accessory cases using lots of shells.

If you have a plan to go on a sightseeing trip to Niigata Prefecture and love to eat seafood, Teradomari Fish Market is a must-visit sightseeing place for you.
