Yakult Joie: Benefits of the Yogurt Drink

Yakult (ヤクルト) is a Japanese company that produces probiotic drinks, whose signature products include Yakult (released in 1935), Joie (ジョア), and Milmil (ミルミル).

According to the article ヤクルト on Japanese Wikipedia, the company’s name derives from the Esperanto word, Jahurto, meaning yogurt.

However, the taste of Yakult, including Yakult 1000, is somewhat different from yogurt. Instead, Joie is just like that, and I bought it (Price: 110 yen) from a vending machine today.

Based on the announcement by Yakult, Joie is the world’s first drink-type yogurt, introduced to the market in 1970, responding to the change in customers’ preferences.

Unlike the original Yakult, it comes in fruit flavors and contains calcium and vitamin D in addition to the probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota (YIT 9029).

Health Benefits

As with Yakult, Joie contains Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota and improves the intestinal environment, as the microorganisms are delivered live to the intestines.

Plus, the yogurt drink serves as a rich source of calcium, like milk. It also contains vitamin D, which helps absorb calcium.
