Another Sakuma Drops from Sakuma Seika (サクマ製菓)

Sad news hit Japanese candy fans recently; Sakuma Seika (佐久間製菓: Sakumaseika), headquartered in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, announced that the company will shut down operations on January 20, 2023.

It’s a shame, but their Sakuma Drops (correctly Sakuma’s Drops) will keep alive in the Sakuma Drops produced by their sibling Sakuma Seika (サクマ製菓: Sakuma Confectionery) based in Meguro Ward, Tokyo.

Honestly, I had never seen the latter Sakuma Drops sold here in Niigata and never tried it before until today (Instead, most supermarkets carry Sakuma’s Drops).

Hearing the news that Sakumaseika has decided to close its business, I couldn’t help but order another Sakuma Drops candy (in bulk) on Amazon and, to my joy, received it yesterday.

While Sakuma’s Drops uses a red tin can, known for appearing in Ghibli’s movie Hotaru no Haka/Grave of the Fireflies, the Sakuma Drops uses green and currently ties up with Kimetsu no Yaiba/Demon Slayer.

Despite having a different color, the Sakuma Drops appears almost identical to Sakuma’s Drops, opened by lifting the lid with a coin or the like.

Flavors/Taste

As you can see in the photo, this one consists of seven flavors. But based on the official site, the Sakuma Drops seems to have one more, Sumomo (スモモ: Japanese plum), which is blue-colored.

Unlike Sakuma’s Drops, this tin can contains Sumomo and Melon candies in place of Grape and Chocolate flavors. But the taste is all delicious and will never disappoint you.
