Teradomari Fish Market: A Sightseeing Place in Niigata
Yesterday, I went to Teradomari Fish Market with my friends to see marine products and eat fresh seafood.
Teradomari Fish Market
Teradomari Fish Market, also known as “Sakana no Ameyoko (魚のアメ横)”, is a fish market located in Nagaoka, a city in Niigata Prefecture known for its fireworks festival.
I think “Tsukiji (築地)” is Japan’s best-recognized fish market, but Teradomari Fish Market is also well-established, representing the Japan Seaside.
Therefore, there are always many tourists taking a stroll and seeing marine products in the market.
But yesterday, I didn’t see so many people walking along the street because we arrived there at around 4 p.m and the place closes at 5 p.m.
As you can see in the video, there are 11 fish dealers in the street. Walking around the market and seeing marine products are just fun.
Marine Products
Teradomari Fish Market carries a wide variety of marine products ranging from high-grade fish to processed seafood.
For example, the expensive fish/shellfish sold in the market includes black-throat seaperch “Nodoguro (のどぐろ)” and abalone “Awabi (アワビ)”.
Meanwhile, the processed food you can find there includes “Shiokara (塩辛)” and the seafood Kamameshi bento.
Also, in some stores along the street, you can taste crab meat and shellfish like oysters.
Foods
Restaurants in Teradomari Fish Market offer various kinds of seafood dishes, including Kaisendon and seafood ramens, such as crab ramen and Iwanori (raw nori) ramen.
As I mentioned above, in the market, you can sample fresh oysters and scallops. In fact, I enjoyed these scallops or Hotate with soy sauce and lemon juice.
Further, various seafood skewers are sold in the stores of some fish dealers. Such foods include grilled squid and prawns, deep-fried shrimps, and salt-grilled sweetfish.
We bought these grilled squid and prawn skewers.
Once we ordered, a store staff began cooking them right in front of us. So we could have fresh ones with the smell of the sea.
Souvenirs
As you can find a wide range of souvenirs in the market, it is hard to decide what to choose.
By the way, the ones seen in the photo are accessory cases using lots of seashells.
Conclusion
If you plan to go on a trip to Niigata Prefecture and love to eat seafood, Teradomari Fish Market is just recommended to you!
