Cup Ramen with Rare Ingredients Vol.1: Shiro-Ebi Shrimp

Recently, I discovered a tasty instant cup ramen with a rare ingredient called Shiro-Ebi (白えび: white shrimp) in a nearby Welcia drugstore.

The product is from the Aichi-based food company 寿がきや, but the shrimp is a local specialty of Toyama, adjacent to Niigata.

Shiro-Ebi, also called Shira-Ebi, is a Japanese white shrimp only caught in Toyama Bay on the Sea of Japan, known as the Jewel of Toyama Bay.

Unlike other shrimps, Shiroebi has a distinctively elegant flavor, which makes this instant ramen uniquely delicious (But it only cost 218 yen).

The contents are relatively simple, only accompanying two flavor packets, which are both 後入れ/put into the bowl after cooking the noodles.

  • The purple packet contains a liquid soup base.
  • The red one has a soup base powder with dehydrated garnishes.

Cooking

As you can guess from the above, the cooking is straightforward.

  1. First, open the lid halfway and take the packets out of the bowl.
  2. Then, pour boiling water until it fills the line inside the cup, close the lid, place the liquid soup base packet on top, and wait 4 minutes.
  3. Then, remove the lid and put the contents of the two packets into the bowl.
  4. Stir well, and enjoy!

Taste

Using Toyama’s Shiro-Ebi powder in its salt-based soup, the ramen is dashi-rich and very flavorful/aromatic!

Despite only 218 yen, it is elegant and rare, and you can’t get the same taste anywhere outside Japan. (Though, in the era of the internet, it may be possible).
