The Popularity Ranking of Japanese Snacks
When it comes to Japanese snacks and candies, I know there are tons of fans around the world. The Japanese snack keeps evolving and new-types of products are going on sale one after another.
As for me, I am fond of trying new things and also limited-time offers. The other day when I was shopping at a supermarket near my house, I found a product that drew my interest.
As a result, I yielded to the temptation and ended up grabbing the bag “Calbee Mentaiko-Mayo Flavor Pizza Potato Chips”, a limited-time snack that was released recently. Now, I am writing this article, enjoying the potato chips.
As you may already know, Calbee is Japan’s largest snack food manufacturer. The Japanese company has been introducing its products to North America under the capital and business alliance with PepsiCo.
Of course, other than Calbee, there are a lot of snack food manufacturers in Japan, and they are fiercely vying with one another to increase their own market share.
The Top 10 Most Popular Snacks in Japan
And today I wondered what snacks and candies are more popular than others, so I searched for the popularity ranking online.
Actually, a popularity contest of Japanese snacks was held on a TV program last November, where 10,000 people took part and chose their favorite treats from about 1700 kinds of Japanese snacks and candies.
According to the result, Japan’s top 10 most popular snacks and sweets are as follows.

By the way, how many items do you know among these 10 Japanese snacks?
Half of the top 10 items are from Calbee, 6 out of the 10 are salty snacks and the rest are sweet treats. To my surprise, almost all the 10 items can be bought on Amazon.com.
Only the Kit Kat Minis is a product from the maker (Nestle) whose head office is outside of Japan (in Switzerland).
In conclusion, except for the Kit Kat Minis, as I expected, the products from Calbee won a sweeping victory.
