Best High Cacao Content (72 %) Chocolate from Meiji
Meiji (明治) is a leading Japanese food company known for its rich lineup of chocolates, many of which have long been favorites in Japan, like this and this.
And this Chocolate Kouka (チョコレート効果: meaning Chocolate Effect), first released in 1998, is also among them.
Meiji Chocolate Kouka Cacao 72 Percent
Chocolate Kouka is a bitter chocolate brand of Meiji with a high cacao content, which comes in 72, 86, and 95 (percent).
And this Cacao 72 % (Price: 250 yen or so) is Japan’s best-selling high cacao content chocolate, which has become almost a staple in my house.
Features
Meiji Chocolate Kouka is rich in cacao polyphenol, good for health and beauty, and the treats are a low GI food, which slows down the speed of sugars absorbed.
Based on the official website, the content of cacao polyphenol is
- Cacao 72 (with 15 pieces): 127 mg per piece/1905 mg per box
- Cacao 86 (with 14 pieces): 147 mg per piece/2058 mg per box
- Cacao 95 (with 12 pieces): 174 mg per piece/2088 mg per box
And the maker recommends taking 3 to 5 pieces of the chocolate daily (about 84 kcal to about 141 kcal), as cacao polyphenol doesn’t stay in the body.
Taste
I like this Cacao 72 the most simply because it is most delicious. It is not that bitter with a well-balanced taste and aroma.
The candy is healthful, well-priced, and tastes good, because of which it is now Japan’s No.1 high cacao content chocolate.
